Day 65: A Sad Day
We hired a taxi driver today to take us to the three main things we wanted to see in Phnom Penh - the Killing Fields, the Genocide Museum, and the Shooting Range.
The first stop was the Killing Fields. Just to be brief.. basically, only 30 years ago, over a million innocent people in Cambodia were killed for no reason. They were killed by other Cambodians. It was like a Holocaust and I never knew about any of this until we were planning for our trip. Everything I learned was just really, really sad. The killing fields is where many of the victims were taken to be tortured and killed.
At the Killing Fields, there were tons of morbid things to see. Piles of the victims’ clothes, their skulls and bones, mass graves and more. Some pieces of clothing still remained on the ground after all these years and poked out from under the dirt.
Next, we went to the shooting range. This was all for Joe, I really had no desire for this again.. I already got the whole shooting range thing out of my system in Phuket. Well, Joe had a good ol’ time there and then we were off to our next stop, the Genocide museum.
The Genocide museum used to be a high school before the killings took place. During that time, however, it became another area where more victims were held captive, tortured and were killed. You could see the cells that they were held in, the devices that were used to kill them… the rooms were also filled with tons of photos of the victims.
Overall, it was a very depressing day to learn about all the horrible things that happened in this country 30 years ago. But, it was also very interesting to see.
